A note on PC and DLC.

Just wanted to take the opportunity to debunk a few things:

We did not delay the PC version for reasons of piracy

We did not delay the PC version because we think "PC is dead" or any such reason

In Fact - we didn't delay it. It takes a lot of time and effort to fix streaming, graphics, physics and all other things that are pretty much locked down on a console to work on a wide variety of PC hardware. Add to that making sure the menus feel nice and work properly on a PC rather then just coming off as a port.

Furthermore, we've been working hard with nvidia on physX support and other nice bonuses. Since we have a lot of people doing different things simultaniously we can take the opportunity to let a few guys who are not working on bugs and "must-fix" issues do some enhancements such as physX while we try to reach a final candidate.

As for the DLC i hear things which we hear *every* time we make DLC: "They kept that out of the original game just to be able to sell it afterwards" or "It's just their initial proof-of-concept levels with some added graphics". Some people even think they look cheap because they are abstract and stylized.

I think those guys should look again.

We have a team of people who started working on the DLC right after they were let of designing and building the game. A lot of idéas were thrown around for what we could do as a DLC. A lot of people have been saying that time trial represents mirror's edge movement and flow at it's purest, so we wen't for a pure time trial pack.

The visual style is selected to make sure it looks cool, unique and each level has a specific mood to it. Also, it tells you we are building it from scratch. Except for that one rat there in the trailer, 100% of what you see in the DLC is brand spanking new, created just for this, which includes new work from our brilliant sound-guys. We liked the idéa of going for pure gameplay, without the distractions that come when you must dress a level to look real-world. It makes the levels readable and understandable in a whole new way. It also allows us to build some structures that exist just because they are fun as hell to move on, rather then having to look like something that could exist in the real world.

Hope this clears a few questions. if you got any more - just shoot.

Re: A note on PC and DLC.

I - and others, I'm sure - are concerned with the performance we're seeing of PhysX on ATI cards. I realise that in such situations the CPU becomes the bottleneck, but even people with high-end CPUs are seeing very bad results.

Until PhysX can be made to run on ATI cards (it is in the works, if unofficially), will Mirror's Edge on PC have the option to turn the PhysX features off? You know, so we can at least play with the same level of detail as the consoles have. I don't want to be punished for buying a non-Nvidia card. wink

I am pretty sure that it will be an option. They wouldn't force someone with a low end card to be forced to run PhysX, and the same goes for people with ATI cards. Also, your drivers will have to support PhysX in order for you to be able to utilize it.

Re: A note on PC and DLC.

That's just it, though. From what we've seen so far, if your card doesn't support PhysX it doesn't get turned off like you'd think, but rather is processed by the CPU irrespective of your drivers - which doesn't appear to have been implemented very well. So what we need is a feature to turn it off completely, at least until a) Nvidia make it work on CPUs better, or b) someone gets it working on ATI cards.

So I hope you're right and we're getting such an option.

Thanks for clearing some stuff up.
Just one question, will there be an editor included with the release of the PC version since it is running off of the Unreal Engine 3?

According to Tom Farrer, they wanted to release a map editor, but they just don't have enough time.

Re: A note on PC and DLC.

Even if they don't have time/money to do a dedicated editor, it might still be possible to support use of standard Unreal Engine 3 tools. Maybe those would not be as easy to use but it might still get us a few interesting add on levels.

About the download content: I can see people who haven't played the game complaining about it because of the simple looks and it only being time trial maps. So you won't get anyone to get the game because of the DLC. Everyone who has played the game probably knows that these maps will be awesome to play and time trial is really where Mirror's Edge shines so it should be well received by actual players.

Will Mirror's Edge for the PC happen to have SecuROM?

Yea I suppose I should have been more precise with my question.
I was wondering if Mirrors Edge would ship with the Unreal Editor like in Unreal Tournament 3 which allows for the creation of custom maps as well as custom assets, mutators, total conversions, and so on.

Unlike something like the recent Farcry 2 editor which restricts you to making just maps using premade models and textures and just allowing you to mess with some sliders.

Re: A note on PC and DLC.

I have a few questions. What do you guys think of the selling numbers until now? Are they higher or lower than you expected? If the selling numbers turn up to be lower than you guys predicted, is there still a chance for the sequel?

Better not of. The usual CD key system is enough.

Didn't he mean that for the console versions?
The PC version already has the editor built in.  I wonder if it will be much trouble to release it with the PC version.

Re: A note on PC and DLC.

We wanted to support the editor but there just hasn't been enough time to make it ready in a state that would be supported. There's a lot of backend stuff with leaderboards and menuwork to display the levels as well as the added support for QA and testing.

As far as PhysX is concerned - The game will run fine without it.

Operating System     Microsoft Windows XP SP2/Vista
Processor                Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz or 100% compatible equivalent
Memory                  1GB RAM
Video Card              256MB memory with Shader Model 3.0*
HDD Space              8GB
DVD Drive               1x DVD Drive
Soundcard               Soundcard with DirectX 9.0c compatibility
DirectX                    DirectX 9.0c
Network:                An online connection is required for access to Leaderboards

That's the min-specc machine and that will have physX turned off. While the physX stuff looks amazing and we're greatful to the help we've had from Nvidia to implement it, we always knew we couldn't make it a "must-have" just yet in a game, as not everyone has it. So you will have the same core experience without it.

Ah, it's nice to see it officially confirmed that something not everyone has is being forced on them. big_smile

Maybe you could release the editor sometime after the PC version is released as a separate download on the internet sometime in the future which you people could have plenty of time to create one or better yet why not just release the SDK aswell to have the game easily modifiable?

Re: A note on PC and DLC.

I would just like to say thank you for putting the effort necessary to making a quality PC product into Mirror's Edge. I'm really excited for this title, and the PhyX and DLC makes me even more excited. In this instance I'm willing to stomach paying for DLC because the content is so appealing, and from what I have heard, you didn't come close to meeting your mark in terms of sales. Hopefully PC sales will convince EA to green light a sequel.

What I really, above all other things want is a SDK or at the very least a map editor. It's fine that you can't get it out the door at launch, most games don't. But sometime within 3 months after launch is fine. This seems like the type of game that would attract mapmakers because of the leaderboard system, and the drive to make incredibly challenging maps that only the best can complete. It might get me to start mapping! Screw it, charge $5 for the tools if you have to. Whatever it takes to get a map editor out. This would also instantly dispel any claims of a lack of content in the game.

I have a quick question if that's alright.

I was wondering how we will know if Physx is enabled in our game and if there is a way to turn it on or off.

So, the network connection is only for LeaderBoards access?
No online authentication/limited activations/Securom DRM, as all 2008 EA published games?

Thats the deciding factor for me, regarding buying or not the game.
