OK, this is how you open the unreal editor:
1. Make sure you have an programme that can open .7z files.
2. [removed] download this package and extract to the Binaries folder of Mirror's Edge.
3. Right-click on the Mirrors Edge File that's in the same folder, Copy To, Desktop.
4. At the desktop right-click on the file you just created, Properties.
5. Behind the original Target you type: edit. (So the text is something like: "C:\ProgramFiles\EAGAMES\MirrorsEdge\Binaries\MirrorsEdge.exe" editor)
6. Run this file and the Editor will start!
Much fun!

How to use the Editor:
Found this somewhere on the net:
http://waylon-art.com/LearningUnreal/
It's a VERY NICE tutorial about how to use the Editor.

I posted a sort-of guide to making and using a basic level, I think, in the other thread. If I ever get things to a more user-friendly format, especially if I get any sort of custom map list working, I might make a website, or at least some sort of guide. We might have a sticky thread for tool/guide/reference links, if there are any friendly mods watching.

as soon as i start it, it stops responding... does anyone know how to fix this?

Hey we have a moding section
nice tut.
I might do a tut on how to extract the models using 3d ripper since a few people seem to be interested.
Oh and Blizzard I was thinking if we get a site up I could add a mini web browser to my map swapper app so that the maps could be add to a page on the site and then the user of the app could download the maps from the program and swap so let me know if you get the site up.

Haha, nice. I remember the old days with UnrealEd 1, nothing but CSG and objects there... Those were awesome times. Now let's see if I can get something done with this stuff.

Hey guys. This certainly is interesting!
Don't mean to break up the party or anything, but I've had to remove the link to the file. Thanks for your understanding.

Why did you have to remove the link to the file ?
like what rule was broken ?

I'm guessing the rule is between 'Illegal Software' and 'Exclusive Material'.
i.e. You should own a legal copy of the software which contains the exclusive material you want.
Plus I've noticed this thread has recently got some attention from websites such as Big Download, BeyondUnreal and Kotaku.
Edit: Maybe because the On-Mirror's-Edge homepage links here too.
Suddenly I've taken an interest in rules... Probably because I noticed them after I did something wrong (which I have tried to fix).
By the way, if someone were to recreate the required files without including the 'exclusive material', that should be a perfectly legal alternative (even though the file names will be the same, the actual content will be different).
Opps: Too bad all the files required aren't just images... Don't know how creating a free alternative to an XML file would go.
Anyway, an example of this is Freedoom, which has recreated the content for Doom that didn't come with the now source code released Doom engine.

fair enough, im not trying to get the link back or anything, i have it haha

I'm gonna PM matthew and see if they were contacted by DICE or something. I've heard nothing but positive feedback from DICE in my contacts with them, but I was afraid that someone posting the resources from UT3 like this wouldn't be acceptable.
jas2o, I had definitely considered making the bitmaps myself, but you're right, I don't know a way to recreate the XML file without actually retyping it in, which would make it mostly the same file.
I really hope Feffe emails me back soon, but if they made the admin take the link down, I have even less hope that they'll say "Hey guys, you can distribute this XML file and some bitmaps, it's ok".
*edit*
Also, lol at dumb news posts. That bigdownload site calls us hackers (in the sense of hacking settings or files to get things to work yes, but the term has bad PR and evokes images of people who break into networks), and says the BeyondUnreal forums "created" the editor...of course, the editor was actually already there, and if the people who figured it out came from the BeyondUnreal forums that's great, but I guess I didn't even know that. ![]()
Then the BeyondUnreal post says "pirating files from UT3". I guess that may be where the link in this thread became involved, and the admin took stuff down, but for my part, I bought Unreal Tournament 3 SPECIFICALLY SO I could use the Mirror's Edge editor, and I'm almost certain I wasn't the only one. As a bonus, UT3 is a cool game and has cool editing capabilities in its own right.
Sweet, ambershee is posting in that thread. I think they answered a question I posted about Mirror's Edge on that (or another) forum before, but they didn't seem to know about the editor working.
Kotaku story looks good though. Yay publicity! Guess I'll have to actually start adding content to my website and hope I don't get a beatdown from EA/DICE. They would honestly be shooting themselves in the foot in a huge manner, however...allowing people to make their own maps only builds MORE interest in the game and keeps the community alive. That's one of the awesome things about PC gaming.

So we can use the UT3 editor but not the exposed ME editor?
and with that, just name the files ME1?
I really want to import some music I made, maybe make some sounds and have it all converted to ogg for use in my h67 map.
The sound package size is giant ATM, like 60mb upk! ![]()
I wouldn't care much about the hacking ideas that site is portraying, if anyone with any kind of authority said anything or did anything mean it would start a blackhole in the matterhorn of Ideas, and that is always counter productive. ![]()

@Blizzard, I totally missed this thread, didn't realize in the other thread about how you were asking me about the filenames. Makes total sense now!
on another note, I invoke squatters rights! ![]()

Glad to hear you got it working. Let me know if you're having problems importing music. Maybe someone with more experience has advice on getting music or sound files imported without the file sizes being huge. ![]()

Hi there, now I got the good files from Gears of War (directories "EditorRes", "wxRC" and "wxRes", tell me if some are missing), but i still don't manage to open the editor, i'm going mad ! Can someone tell me what i should do ? Thanks in advance.
Offline
MichaWha, exactly what happens, does "MirrorsEdge.exe editor" just crash?
Those directories should be correct. Just to verify, you copied those exact three directories (not just the contents), to your install "Binaries" directory, the same directory that contains MirrorsEdge.exe?
Offline
For the second part of your message : yes, exactly!
And for the first part, in the path of the properties of the shortcut, I add the word editor in the end, after the "". And when I run it, nothing happens and finally, I got a crash message...
edit : I don't understand because I did the same for Gears of War and it works well...

That sounds exactly correct, and I'm sorry...I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem.
Just to make sure, this is Gear of War 2 you copied the files from?
If it's not too much trouble and you really want me/us to look at it, you can bring up a command prompt and change to the install directory (something like "cd "\program files (x86)\ea games\mirrors edge\...\Binaries" using the correct path, of course). Then, you can do "dir wxRes >> filelist.txt", "dir editorRes >> filelist.txt" and "dir wxRC >> filelist.txt" to save a listing of all those bitmaps and resource files to a single text file. THEN finally, you could email the listing to one of us, or post it, so we can verify that we have exactly the same files. My email is gtschemer at gmail.com.
Good luck!

Thank you very much.
Though, it works now ! I re-installed the game and try some manipulations and now it's okay.
Now I'll try to learn how to use the Unreal Ed and create a map !
If you have good links with explanations and tutorials, it would be nice to share it. Thank you in advance!
edit : oh, I forget your site ! I'll take a look !

Excellent! I was going to suggest that perhaps a reinstall would fix it. And yes, for information you can check this forum for some of the questions other users have had, as well as my site. In fact, you might be interested to know that someone is currently translating my site into French! So, I should soon have a French as well as an English localization hosted.
*edit*
Oh, you might also check the links section of my site, especially Waylon's basic tutorials, to get you used to the Unreal Editor.

That's a very good news ! Even if I understand well english (I understand better than I express myself !).
I'm creating a "modding" page on my fansite and I put a link of your site on this page, it can be useful.
edit : now I have another problem... When I start the editor and load a map I've done, the editor crashes ! Do you know why ?
